Just outside Wombat Creek (near Orbost) in East Gippsland, the Wombat Honey Shop is a roadside curiosity that’s hard to miss and worth the stop! You'll know you're nearly there by an avenue of cheery yellow "HONEY" signs. By the time you pull over, you'll be too excited to put on the handbrake... the roadside stall looks like something cut-and-pasted straight from a Looney Tunes cartoon!
Bright yellow with hexagon windows, it's a self-serve setup that’s charmingly low-tech. The timber joinery is something to behold! Inside, shelves are stacked with honey in an array of sizes and flavours – yellow box, red box, mahogany, banksia, hill gum. There are wax candles, homemade jams, and honey dippers. Look up for Winnie the Pooh. He, and a handy little CCTV camera are keeping an eye on any potential honey thieves! A heavy-duty cash box allows the stall to operate unstaffed 24 hours a day, important if you find yourself looking for something to put on your toast at 3am! So, next time you're on the Princes Highway between Nowa Nowa and Orbost, keep an eye out for the funkiest little honey shop in glamorous East Gippsland.
